![]() Copies of my department-issued ID, my county issued ID, and my current MI CPL have been included with this letter of request. I am a Police Officer for the YOUR DEPT NAME, YOUR DEPT ADDRESS. I have chosen to carry a different firearm thus I need a CPL with exemption box checked as that is the ID I will be carrying with while off duty. My dept only allows me to carry off duty with my dept issued firearm. I am requesting that my CPL be re-issued with the “Exempt from pistol free zones, MCL 28.425o(4)†box checked, indicating that I am exempt from the pistol free zones. RE: Request for Exemption from MI CPL Pistol-Free Zones Once approved, you get a letter to go to the CC's office, pay your $10 and bring a new picture, and you'll get a new card issued with the checkbox checked.Ī letter something along the line below would do the trick. Write a letter stating why you are looking for an exempt card, fax/email/mail it to them, and they would send it to the gun board. I contacted our clerk's office, and they told me what to do. Obviously this information is good only AFTER you graduate the acadamy. This way I can carry my hangun of choice in pistol free zones. I am wondering, once I become a LEO, if I can get a CPL with exemption from pistol free zones. This is fine by me as I already have a CPL, but I am currently not a LEO so I can't carry in pistol free zones. Therefore, if I wanted to carry a smaller gun I would have to carry in a civilian capacity with a CPL. From what I understand, CBP allows off duty carry of their full sized issued handgun off duty (which may be hard to conceal at times). I'll double check into that though.I start with CBP on Tuesday and assuming I pass the academy, will be a CBP officer in June. Therefore, I think you would probably fall into that category as someone who would be exempt. Before, it was only while on-duty, but now it applies to off-duty as well I believe. I know the governor just signed into law a bill that authorizes MDOC Parole Agents, MSP Motor Carrier Officers, Reserve Officers, PI's and Sheriff's Corrections Officers the right to carry in a pistol-free zone as long as they possess a valid CPL. However, I think you might be asking whether or not you're exempt from the pistol-free zone if you work for an agency that doesn't authorize off-duty carry. ![]()
